Since (x-a) is a factor, then it means that A must make the equation = 0. So here is a quick explanation using another random equation. If we have (x-1)(x-4), then the factors there are x-1 and x-4. And when he multiply that out we get x^2-5x+4, and really all the factors are, are just things that make an equation like that =0. So all we really have to do is plug in 1 or 4 (in that case, since we want x-4 or x-1 to = 0). So when we plug in 1 we get 1-5+4 which = 0 and when we plug in 4 we get 16-20+4 which also equals zero. Using this method, is how we can solve the problem you have.

So putting it simply, just plug in a(a positive "a" since in order for x-a to be 0, x=a) for x and it will make the equation = 0, and thats all you really need to do.
